Garlic mashed potatoes are one of my favorite side dishes. The creamy, buttery potatoes and mellow garlic create a savory flavor that’s hard to resist.

I love making this dish for family dinners or when I want a simple side that still feels special. It’s smooth, fluffy, and full of flavor, and it makes an ordinary meal feel a lot more memorable.

Garlic Mashed Potatoes Recipe
Key Ingredients
Russet potatoes are starchy, so they mash up light and fluffy. They also absorb the butter and milk well.

Garlic: I cook the garlic right in the pot with the potatoes so it turns soft and mild. It’s a gentler way to get garlic flavor than adding raw garlic at the end.
Butter gives the potatoes a rich, creamy flavor.
Tips & Tricks
Dry the potatoes after draining: Return the potatoes and garlic to the hot pot for a minute so the extra water cooks off. Wet potatoes can make the mash thin.

Mash the garlic in with the potatoes: Press the soft cloves right into the potatoes while you mash so the garlic flavor spreads evenly.
Don’t overmix: Once the milk goes in, stir just until combined. I stop as soon as the potatoes look creamy because overmixing can make them gummy.

How to Pair
Garlic mashed potatoes pair beautifully with a variety of classic mains.
They go well with juicy roast chicken, tender grilled steak, or slow-cooked pot roast for a hearty, balanced meal. The creamy texture also makes a perfect match with buttery baked salmon or crisp-skinned pork chops.

For lighter or vegetarian options, you can serve them with roasted asparagus, sautéed green beans, or a bright spinach salad with lemon vinaigrette. The garlicky flavor complements earthy roasted mushrooms or even a simple lentil loaf.
