Baked Mozzarella Sticks with Dipping Sauces

Quick and easy baked mozzarella sticks

Mozzarella sticks are a popular appetizer, often found in American-Italian restaurants and sports bars. They feature sticks of mozzarella cheese coated in a crispy breadcrumb mixture, then fried until golden. I prefer the baked version.

Mozzarella sticks can be enjoyed with a classic marinara sauce or creamy ranch dressing for dipping. They also pair beautifully with garlic bread and pepperoni pizza for a complete Italian-inspired platter. For a lighter touch, they go well alongside Caesar salad or a fresh garden salad to balance the richness of the cheese.

For heartier meal combinations, mozzarella sticks complement chicken wings or sliders, making them great for game-day spreads or casual gatherings. They can also be served with a side of loaded fries or onion rings for an indulgent, shareable feast.

Here’s how to make the baked mozzarella sticks:

  • Servings: 4
  • Prep time: 15 minutes
  • Cook time: 8–10 minutes
  • Total time: 25 minutes (includes freezing)
  • Calories: ~280 per serving
  • Cuisine: Italian-American
  • Course: Appetizer / Snack

Ingredients

  • 8 mozzarella string cheese sticks
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray or 2 tablespoons olive oil spray

For serving:

  • ½ cup marinara sauce (warmed)

Instructions

  1. Freeze the cheese (non-negotiable step)
Unwrap mozzarella sticks and freeze for at least 30 minutes. This prevents melting and leaking.
  2. Prepare the coating stations
    • Bowl 1: flour
    • Bowl 2: eggs + water, whisked
    • Bowl 3: breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper
  3. Bread the mozzarella (double coating for exact results)
    • Roll frozen cheese in flour, shaking off excess
    • Dip in egg mixture
    • Roll in breadcrumbs, pressing gently
    • Dip again in egg, then breadcrumbs again
This double layer guarantees crisp texture and no cheese escape.
  4. Freeze again
Place coated sticks on a plate and freeze for 15 minutes. Do not skip; this step locks in the coating.
  5. Bake
    • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C)
    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
    • Arrange sticks with space between them
    • Spray generously with cooking spray on all sides
    • Bake 8–10 minutes, flipping once at 5 minutes
  6. Serve immediately
Let rest 1 minute, then serve hot with warm marinara sauce.

Notes

  • Always use low-moisture mozzarella string cheese for consistent results.
  • Parchment paper is essential because foil increases sticking and tearing.
  • Spray thoroughly; dry spots will cause the pale, soft coating.
  • Best eaten immediately while hot and stretchy.
  • If your mozzarella sticks aren’t crispy enough, it’s often due to fine breadcrumbs, too little oil spray, or overcrowding on the baking sheet.
